Our soft, fluffy cotton is grown locally, near the weavers’ homes where they spin it into yarn. But before the cotton bundles reach the cooperatives and IOU weavers, they are dyed and set out to dry in the only sustainable dyeing plant in Tamil Nadu. The dyeing process is done by hand (by men only) and reduces water, energy and chemical needs.
To obtain the pure shades and subtle variability of natural dyes, they use common, locally available materials such as roots, berries, bark, leaves and wood. Unlike synthetic dyes, this preserves their true colors.
The dyeing and drying process takes 2 days per color. They can dye up to 2000 meters per day. That’s 4,900 kilos!
